Area Recreation

The areas surrounding the city offer a wide range of activities to suit all interests and skill levels. Hike, bike, or ski through the beautiful mountains and trails, or enjoy fishing in one of the many nearby lakes and rivers. The area is also home to numerous parks and recreational areas, including Giant Springs State Park, the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park and the Sluice Boxes State Park. Great Falls is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.

Great Falls has nearby access to the Missouri River and several state parks and forests, including the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Showdown Montana ski resort is located approximately 65 miles from Great Falls and offers skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

Within and around the city, the River’s Edge Trail, a 60-mile trail system along the Missouri River is perfect for walking, hiking, jogging, skating, cycling, and mountain biking. This trail also connects to numerous parks and the Great Falls’ historic downtown. The city is also home to the Scheels Aim High Big Sky Aquatic and Recreation Center that features an 8 lane lap pool, recreation pool with water slide, full court gym and fitness rooms.

Glacier National Park is just a short drive away, offering a range of experiences with its scenery, hiking trails, and outdoor activities. Visit destinations like Logan Pass, Lake McDonald, and Many Glacier, each providing uniquely stunning landscapes.

Community Events

Great Falls has a downtown area with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Great Falls is home to the world-renowned C.M. Russell Museum, showcasing the art and history of the American West, as well as the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, which meticulously chronicles the famous explorers’ epic journey through the region. The historic downtown features many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The community hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, including the Great Falls Farmers Market and the Montana State Fair. During the summer months, Gibson Park and Lion’s Park host concert series, featuring local and regional musicians. The holiday season kicks off with the Downtown Great Falls Christmas Stroll in December.

Education

Great Falls Public Schools operates two high schools: Great Falls High School and C.M. Russell High School. Additionally, Great Falls Central Catholic High School and Foothills Community Christian School are available as educational options. Great Falls College MSU offers dual enrollment programs for high school students and provides programs in healthcare, technology, and other fields. The city also hosts several higher education institutions, including the University of Great Falls.
